Bryophyte Identification Course

25th October 2023 — 10am-4pm

The Plock is a perfect place to improve your bryological knowledge. With a wide range of habitats all within easy access of each other — moorland, woodland, coastline, and wildflower meadows — there’s a huge variety of species to explore on the day.

The field work will be followed by lab work in the afternoon to check and confirm field identifications. This part of the day is essential for closely examining species and developing future survey skills.

Lunch and hot drinks will be provided. Most of the day will be spent outdoors, so please come prepared for any weather and bring any additional snacks you might need.

All participants must bring a hand lens with at least x10 magnification. Contact us if you have any questions about this.

Nick Hodgetts has been a member of the British Bryological Society since 1984, serving as Secretary, Conservation Officer, President, and currently as Liverwort Recorder. Based on Skye, he works as a botanical consultant contributing to European bryophyte publications, including the European Bryophyte Red List and checklist, and is BBS regional recorder for Skye and on the editorial board of the Journal of Bryology.
