The Lochalsh Reuse & Recycle Hub in Kyle is a wee place with a big purpose!

Every purchase goes towards the local community – all money raised from sales of preloved stock helps towards keeping us running.

Shopping second-hand reduces the carbon footprint associated with new production, which saves valuable resources and minimises environmental impact – plus second-hand items come at a fraction of the cost of new items.

We also have the community fridge inside the hub – where surplus food is shared to reduce the amount going to landfill – any food in the fridge/freezer/shelves is completely free to take! The hub could not run without the support of the wonderful team of volunteers who help keep the shop open – pop in, say hello and have a browse.

If you are looking to donate to us please take a moment to read through our donation guidelines listed below – our space is a bit snug, so handling too many donations at once can be a bit tricky, we really appreciate the continued support of the local community!

Community Fridge

Our community fridge was set up as part of the Lochalsh Community Response and has continued to reduce food waste from local shops.
Originally located at the Church of Scotland hall in Kyle, it was run by volunteers there and is now located within The Lochalsh Reuse and Recycle Hub, Main Car Park, Kyle of Lochalsh.

Time frame: Nov 2021 – Nov 2022
Funding: £20,000
The future of the Community Fridge in Kyle has been secured for a further year and a new community food growing project will soon start in Lochalsh with £20,000 of funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery. Kyle & Lochalsh Community Trust has been awarded the funding to continue, expand and find permanent premises for the Community Fridge in Kyle, and to start a new community food growing project in 3 pilot areas in Lochalsh. The project will be coordinated by Annie Penrod who has been running the Community Fridge since it was set up over a year ago.

Funders: Peoples Postcode Lottery

Skill Sharing

In 2020 we worked with a number of local growers and food producers to host informal skill sharing. These events all took place online and have been edited and uploaded on to YouTube. Videos include no dig method, composting, fruit trees and bee keeping
